The History of Quadrillion
I am the co-creator of the Princess cut diamond. Before 1980, when the cut was developed, square shaped diamonds were only available in a dull step-cut version (I know it's unbelievable). At that time, without the aid of CAD programs, it took us two years to reach the perfect cut. The result was an ideal cut - square shaped diamond - with the brilliance of a round diamond. During the developing time we called it 'Princes Cut' but to distinguish the ultimate version from the experiments we named it 'Quadrillion'.
The brilliance or of a diamond is determined by its proportions, its faceting and its cut. The better the diamond is cut, the more it will sparkle. However, better cuts sacrifice a larger portion of the rough stone to achieve this brilliance and therefore the price of ideal cut diamonds is higher. Many copied the cut and made it less expensive by leaving more of the rough stone at the bottom. Indeed, this added weight to the stone and reduced the price per carat, but sacrificed brilliance and surface area. I remained committed to producing the most brilliant stones possible and that from the days of its creation distinguished between the commercial Princess cut and the Quadrillion. |
