When we think of diamonds, we think of a small round stone set into an engagement ring or a pair of earrings. Most of us never see a diamond larger than a kernel of corn. This is because the diamonds we commonly encounter are gem industry-grade stones exclusively used to make jewelry.

There are almost $13,000,000,000 worth of diamonds dug out of the earth each year, the majority of which weigh less than one carat which is equal to 0.2 grams. Large diamonds are heavy and not comfortable to wear when set in pendants or rings. The heavier the diamond, the more expensive and less affordable it is going to be for most people. In contrast to the small diamonds we are used to seeing, there are naturally occurring ones that are astoundingly large.

Mads Phikamphon, who runs the Danish beauty and jewelry blog MightyGoods.com, sent me an infographic that illustrates the top 10 biggest diamonds ever discovered.

All of the large diamonds were discovered on the African continent and they vary greatly in Carat weight, cut, color and clarity. Their price does not neccesarily corrolate with their their size. Diamonds’ value is determined by the GIA globally accepted 4Cs of Diamond Quality which is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world.

When a designer gets the opportunity to work with a large diamond, he is challenged with the task of creating a design with a perfect balance between the bold statement of the large diamond and the smaller details that support it.
