Blaze® Cut Diamond, Everything You Need to Know

Bez Ambar · February 9, 2015

The Blaze® is not a shape. It is a way of cutting a diamond to maximize fire, the rainbow color flashes that most diamonds suppress in favor of white light. It produces a visual effect you will not find in a standard brilliant.

What Fire Actually Is

The Optical Property Most Cuts Trade Away

When light enters a diamond, two things happen simultaneously. The diamond splits white light into its spectral components, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, the same way a prism does. This is called dispersion, and the visible result is fire: colored flashes that appear to float inside the stone as you move it under light.

The second thing that happens is internal reflection. Light bounces off the pavilion facets and returns through the table as white brightness.

The problem is that these two effects compete. Facet patterns optimized for white brightness, the round brilliant, the princess cut, most standard cuts, are cut to a geometry that maximizes internal reflection. That geometry also dampens dispersion. The stones are very bright; they do not show much color.

The Blaze® changes the geometry. Its larger, fewer facets are positioned to prioritize dispersion over pure brightness. The result: you see the spectral colors, genuine fire, rather than a wash of white scintillation.

How the Blaze® Is Cut

Fewer Facets, Larger Surfaces

A standard round brilliant has 57 or 58 facets. The Blaze® uses significantly fewer, larger facets. The specific angles and proportions are proprietary, the result of decades of development in Bez Ambar’s Los Angeles studio, but the principle is straightforward.

Smaller facets produce more scintillation: the twinkling, flash-on/flash-off effect you see when you move a pavé-set ring under light. Larger facets produce broader flashes that let the light separate into its spectral components before it exits the stone.

Think of the difference between a cut-glass chandelier and a single large prism. Both are refracting light. The chandelier produces sparkle, many small points of light. The prism produces a broad, vivid rainbow. The Blaze® is engineered toward the prism end of that spectrum.

The Blaze® vs a Standard Brilliant

Side by Side

The easiest way to understand the Blaze® is to hold it next to a standard round brilliant under the same light source.

The round brilliant will appear very bright. White light returns evenly across the table. Under direct overhead light, it is dazzling. Under softer, ambient light, it looks somewhat less dramatic.

The Blaze® will look different. Under direct light you will see color flashes, deep amber, electric blue, vivid green, emanating from the facets. The total brightness may appear lower than the round brilliant, but the fire is measurably higher. Under soft or candlelight conditions, the Blaze® typically outperforms the round brilliant visually, because softer light brings out dispersion more than reflection.

Bez Ambar has documented this comparison on video; the Blaze® produces color dispersion roughly ten times higher than a standard round brilliant by measured spectral output.

Where the Blaze® Is Used

Settings and Pairings

The Blaze® is used throughout the Bez Ambar collection, typically in one of three ways.

As the center stone: A single Blaze® as the featured diamond in a solitaire or halo setting. The larger the stone, the more pronounced the fire effect.

As shank or band diamonds: A row of Blaze® diamonds set along the shank of an engagement ring or wedding band. This is a Bez Ambar signature, the ring appears to be on fire at the finger, with color radiating outward from every stone.

As a frame or halo: Blaze® diamonds surrounding a center stone of a different cut, round brilliant, oval, cushion. The contrast between the white light of the center and the color fire of the halo creates a layered visual effect that single-cut halos cannot produce.

What to Know Before Buying

Grading and Evaluation

The Blaze® is cut to specific Bez Ambar proportions. It cannot be sourced from a commodity diamond supplier, if a stone is described as a “Blaze® cut” but does not come from Bez Ambar, the name is being used incorrectly. The Blaze® is a registered trademark.

Because the Blaze® is optimized for fire rather than GIA brightness metrics, it will not always score at the top of standard diamond light performance reports (which are designed around the round brilliant). This is not a flaw. It reflects a deliberate design choice. Evaluate a Blaze® on fire, hold it under warm light and watch for color, not on the same scorecard as a round brilliant.

Color and clarity grades apply normally. The fire effect is more visible in lower color grades (G–J) because the dispersion produces color regardless of the body color of the stone. In higher color grades (D–F), the fire reads as purer, more distinct spectral flashes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Blaze® Cut diamond? The Blaze® is a proprietary diamond cut developed by Bez Ambar, designed to maximize fire, the spectral color dispersion that most brilliant cuts suppress in favor of white light. It uses larger, fewer facets positioned to prioritize dispersed colored light over reflected white light.

How is the Blaze® different from a round brilliant? A round brilliant is optimized for brightness: maximum white light return. The Blaze® is optimized for fire: maximum color dispersion. Both are beautiful; they create different visual effects. The round brilliant is brighter under direct light. The Blaze® shows more color, reds, blues, greens, especially under warm or ambient light.

Is the Blaze® a registered trademark? Yes. The Blaze® is a registered trademark of Bez Ambar. Stones described as “Blaze® cut” by other retailers are using the name incorrectly.

Can I get Blaze® diamonds in different shapes? The Blaze® is a square cut. It is typically set as a square stone or used in pavé-style applications along shanks and bands. Contact the Bez Ambar studio for current availability in specific sizes and specifications.

Does the Blaze® cost more than a standard diamond? Pricing varies based on carat weight, color, and clarity like any diamond. Because the Blaze® is cut to proprietary specifications by Bez Ambar’s team rather than sourced from commodity inventory, pricing reflects the craftsmanship and exclusivity of the cut. Discuss specifics directly with the studio.
