5 Carat Diamond Ring, What to Know Before You Buy
A 5 carat diamond is not just a big 1 carat diamond. The physics of light, the visual impact of the cut, and the structural requirements of the setting all change at this size. Here is what to understand before you spend at this level.
What 5 Carats Actually Looks Like
Size vs Weight
Carat is a unit of weight, 0.2 grams per carat, not size. Two diamonds with identical carat weights can look dramatically different in diameter depending on how they were cut. This effect is amplified at 5 carats because the absolute differences become larger.
A well-cut 5 carat round brilliant diamond has a table diameter of approximately 11.0 to 11.2 mm. A well-cut 5 carat oval will appear larger because its length (typically 14 to 15 mm) extends across more visual field than a round stone of the same weight.
A poorly cut 5 carat stone, cut deep to retain weight from the rough, might measure only 10 mm across. It will look like a 3.5 or 4 carat well-cut stone. At this price level, that is a significant visual and financial difference.
Face-up size by shape (approximate, well-cut 5 carat):
- Round brilliant: ~11.0 mm diameter
- Oval: ~14 × 10 mm
- Cushion: ~10.5 × 10.5 mm
- Emerald cut: ~12 × 9 mm
- Princess/Quadrillion: ~10.0 × 10.0 mm
The 4 Cs at 5 Carats
How They Work Differently
Cut is more important, not less. At 1 carat, a slightly below-ideal cut is often invisible to the naked eye. At 5 carats, the larger surface area means every facet has more visual impact. A poorly cut 5 carat stone looks noticeably dull. A well-cut 5 carat stone is spectacular. The difference between Excellent and Very Good cut quality is visible and real at this size.
Color matters more. In a round brilliant under 2 carats, color differences between G and J are subtle and often invisible in a setting. In a 5 carat stone, color is visible, the body color of the diamond shows across a larger surface. H is typically the lowest color grade that looks clean face-up in white gold or platinum at this size. In yellow gold, you can go lower (J or K) because the metal warmth masks the body color.
Clarity is more lenient than you might expect. The GIA clarity scale runs from Flawless to I3. At 5 carats, VS2 is genuinely eye-clean in most stones, inclusions graded at VS2 are minor enough that they are not visible without magnification. SI1 can be eye-clean in well-positioned inclusions; SI2 may show inclusions to an attentive observer. Going above VS2 (VS1, VVS, IF, FL) produces a premium that is largely invisible in real-world wearing conditions.
Carat weight is predetermined. You are buying a 5 carat stone. The variation within “5 carat” is in how that weight is distributed, and whether it is face-up size or hidden in depth.
Setting Considerations
What a 5 Carat Stone Requires
A 5 carat diamond is heavy relative to the ring. The setting must be designed to secure it properly, not just aesthetically, but structurally.
Prong geometry matters. A 5 carat round brilliant requires prongs that are long enough to grip the girdle securely and strong enough to resist bending in daily wear. Thin decorative prongs appropriate for a 1 carat stone may not be adequate for a 5 carat stone. Six-prong settings offer more security than four-prong for large stones.
Low settings require care. Bezel settings and very low prong settings that bring the diamond close to the hand look elegant but increase the impact risk. A 5 carat stone sitting low is more vulnerable to direct impact (against a countertop, a steering wheel, a gym weight) than the same stone in a higher setting. This is a design trade-off, not a reason to avoid low settings, just something to know.
The shank needs to match. A delicate 1.5mm shank looks proportionally wrong under a 5 carat center stone. It will also flex under the weight of the stone over time. A 2.5mm to 3mm shank in platinum is the appropriate structural support for a stone at this size.
What 5 Carats Costs
The Price Curve
Diamond pricing is not linear. A 5 carat diamond does not cost five times what a 1 carat diamond costs, it costs substantially more, because large rough diamonds are genuinely rarer than small ones, and the price per carat increases with size.
Approximate retail price ranges for 5 carat round brilliants (2024):
- G, VS2, Excellent cut: $80,000 – $120,000
- H, VS2, Excellent cut: $65,000 – $95,000
- I, SI1, Excellent cut: $45,000 – $70,000
- Lab-grown equivalent (G, VS2, Excellent): $8,000 – $15,000
Lab-grown 5 carat diamonds have become genuinely available and optically identical to natural stones. The price difference is significant. The resale value difference is also significant, lab-grown diamonds have seen dramatic price compression and recover very little at resale.

Custom Setting at This Level
At 5 carats, a custom setting designed around the specific stone produces better results than selecting from standard settings. Every large stone has a specific combination of shape, dimensions, and face-up appearance that suggests the right design.
Bez Ambar’s studio works with clients to source center stones at this level, through the Los Angeles diamond district and established wholesale relationships, and to design and build settings around them. This produces a finished piece where the setting was conceived for that specific diamond rather than sized to accommodate it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How large is a 5 carat diamond ring? A well-cut 5 carat round brilliant diamond measures approximately 11 mm in diameter, roughly the diameter of a pencil eraser. The perceived size depends heavily on the cut: a well-cut 5 carat stone looks larger than a poorly cut stone of the same weight.
How much does a 5 carat diamond ring cost? A 5 carat natural round brilliant in G color, VS2 clarity, Excellent cut typically retails in the $80,000 to $120,000 range. Lab-grown equivalents are $8,000 to $15,000. The setting adds $3,000 to $15,000+ depending on design complexity and metal.
What color grade should I buy in a 5 carat diamond? In white metal (platinum or white gold), H is the lowest color grade that reads clean face-up to most observers. In yellow or rose gold, J or K is acceptable because the warm metal tone masks body color. Going above G provides diminishing visual returns at significant price premium.
What clarity grade should I buy in a 5 carat diamond? VS2 is eye-clean in most 5 carat stones. SI1 can be eye-clean if the inclusions are well-positioned and not under the table. Going above VS2 (VS1, VVS, Flawless) adds significant cost for characteristics that are invisible without magnification.
Can I customize a 5 carat diamond ring at Bez Ambar? Yes. Custom work is the standard approach at this size. Bez Ambar sources center stones and designs settings around them in the Downtown Los Angeles studio. Contact the studio to discuss your specifications, timeline, and budget.
